Nature Workshop: “Managing a Nesting Box” Talk with Martha Kane

Location: Westfield Bank Pavilion

Learn the do's and don'ts for installing and maintaining a nest box for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds, tree swallows, chickadees and wrens.  Bird houses can actually harm our native birds instead of help them if you don't monitor and maintain them properly. We will discuss types of boxes, where to locate a box, how to monitor a box safely, cleaning a nest box, and common problems.

Martha (Marti) Kane grew up in Westfield but spent most of her career in North Carolina training park rangers and managing a nature preserve.  She recently retired and moved back to the area.  She enjoys doing eBird counts at area parks and monitoring nest boxes for bluebirds and other cavity-nesting songbirds.

*The workshop will meet at the Westfield Bank Pavilion located outside the Children’s Playground. Rain or shine. You are welcome to bring a nest box to this presentation for evaluation.

Workshops are free of charge.
