Friday Mornings for Children: Davis Bates: Under One Sky

Location: Beveridge Pavilion

Come celebrate the diverse heritage of the United States with award winning singer and storyteller Davis Bates in a program of participatory songs and stories for all ages.  Entitled Under One Sky: A Song & Story Celebration, the performance will include traditional and contemporary folk songs and stories from New England and around the world.  Audience members will hear how a coyote got his howl, how foam came to be in the ocean, and more, and will be invited to sing, move and clap their hands.  There will even be a short lesson on how to play music on spoons from a kitchen drawer and a guest appearance by a dancing wooden dog named Bingo.

Davis Bates has been telling stories for over 45 years in schools, libraries, colleges and community settings around New England and across the country.  His recording of Family Stories won a Parent’s Choice Gold Award and was named one of the year’s best Audio Recordings by Booklist Magazine.  He has also served as director and consultant for several local and regional oral history and folk art projects.  Davis lives in the village of Shelburne Falls, MA, and when he isn't collecting or learning stories, he spends his time acting in local theater productions, developing various pollinator projects and working to support Hampshire College and gardening on the Hampshire campus and at home.

Friday Mornings for Children are held in the Beveridge Pavilion Annex from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, weather permitting, and are free of charge. Chairs will be provided and blankets are welcome.
